‘Date Night’ is a series of weekly couple themed events for the month of May, to promote unique experiences and conversation between couples. Organized by the Kingston Parks & Recreation department, each week is an individual program designed to promote collaboration and coordination between couples, to deepen bonds and create fun memories. With a focus on affordability and participation, participation in the programs is not limited to only couples, with any relationship of adult partners welcome to participate, from best friends to newlyweds to senior couples. For the first week of Date Night, the Kingston Parks & Recreation Department is presenting “Book-Vase Bouquet Craft”. This event is a simple craft for all skill levels, where couples will be tasked with creating a simple bouquet to house fake flowers, out of an upcycled book. The bouquet is designed to be a gift to your partner, so choose a book color and flowers that they will enjoy. Each individual will be provided a single Hardcover book to use for the vase, but will have access to the full array of flowers to design the bouquet, keeping the amounts per bouquet within reason. Both the book and the flowers will be provided in an array of options. If you wish to provide your own specific flowers or book to utilize for the craft, you are more than welcome to!If you wish to create multiple bouquets, then please bring your own hard cover to convert into a book-vase! As well, while we may have a surplus of flowers, flowers will be distributed for everyone to participate in their first bouquet. If you wish to create multiple, you are welcome to the surplus of supplies.(Be warned, turning a book into a book-vase does involve cutting up the pages, and the book will be largely unreadable, so we recommend choosing something you have no intention of reading again.)

For the second week of Date Night, the Kingston Parks & Recreation Department is presenting “Build a BoardGame together!” This event is designed around cooperation and teamwork between partners to create a new or modified version of a board/card game! Participants will have the option of using the materials from upcycled board/card games, or creating materials from scratch using any resources available, to create your game. You can recreate Uno with custom cards, fix all the issues you have with Monopoly, or create an entirely new game together! You will be tasked with creating the game, the pieces, and write down the basic rules for playing. If there is time available, we also welcome participants to test the game, and for groups to try each other’s games! Should you finish early, or would rather just play games and not create custom ones, we also have board games you are welcome to try! Examples include Mahjong, Catan, Chess, and even a custom game made by our organizers named ‘Untangle’! The point of tonight is to experience board games and their power to bring together people through casual competitiveness and cooperation. Games are meant to be enjoyed, so however you want to participate, we would love to have you!

5:30 PM - 7:00 PM    Date Night Presents: The Amazing Date! - Date Night Presents: The Amazing Date!
For the Third week of Date Night, the Kingston Parks & Recreation Department is presenting “The Amazing Date!” Inspired by the hit TV show “The Amazing Race”, this week’s event will challenge participants to compete in various competitive challenges, ranging from trivia about your partner to mind reading. The night will include 4 unique challenges, where you will complete the objective of each task as fast as possible. There won’t be any challenges based solely on physical ability, instead testing your relationships, bonds, and trust. While we will keep the full list of games hidden, we can reveal that one game we will be playing is “The Wedding Shoe Game”. Popular on social media, couples will be placed back-to-back, unable to see one another or their answers, and asked a trivia question about their relationship. Participants will then hold up a sign sharing which of them is a better answer to the question. An example question may be, “Who is the better cook?” To answer, players will hold up the shoe, or in our game’s version a sign, saying if they are answering ‘Me’ or ‘Them’. To win the game, the participants must get three matching answers consecutively. On paper, this date night will pit participants against other couples in a cut throat competition. Yet, remember the true goal is to enjoy a night together with your partner, try something new together, and deepen your bonds over a fond memory. While the glory and bragging rights are an attractive bonus, we want everyone to have fun together and enjoy a nice night away from the usual stresses of the world. While we don’t have any cash prize or vacations available for winning, we will be rewarding our winner with credit for K-rec programs in the future!
